Space Operas: Zubu And The Sensei

The Master mentioned in Zubu's backstory over in The Galactic Pirates thread.

Nuur'tix Uakseltis.

The One Armed Master of Zo Acaxadomupp Eb Zo Fulnick Whoaxavons.

The Academy Of The Burning Heavens.

A retired soldier and an old friend of Ash, he set up his school to teach the next generations the art of the blade and self-defense with just morals.

Zubu, then an Orphan living on Kenranerth6V7D was intrigued by the school and climbed the many stairs, seriously it was a lot of stairs, and asked for the Sensei to take her in. No reason not too, so Nuur'tix took her in and she became a student of the school.

When they weren't training they were doing chores around the Temple and around the town to establish a sense of family and unity in the students and the village. Zubu became one of the greatest students, taking very well to the training.

She was extraordinarily talented with an instinctual grasp of the techniques even from a young age. Zubu swiftly climbed the ranks to the more advanced classes.
However her insane skills lead to a growing inflated sense of pride and arrogance in her heart.

Zubu could trounce the other students so she began challenging other schools students and thrashing them with a modified aggressive version of their normally defensive style.

Nuur'tix noticed this problem however and took her aside and made it clear that this was not what he was teaching them.

Zubu insisted that she was bringing prestige and notoriety to their school. People would come from all over the stars to learn from them when they learned how powerful their style was!

Notoriety certainly.

But not prestige. Not in the way he wished.

The Sensei sat her down and explained that while her heart was in the right place, she was sending the wrong message. Their school was teaching a modified version of his traditionally aggressive style of swordsmanship because of just how much pain he felt from the lives he used to take in the wars.

He even showed Zubu his old prosthetic arm he'd taken off after he retired. It was old, burnt, torn up and covered in battle scars. Much like him. What he was teaching them was based around self-defense, not destruction or violence. He wanted them to become great defenders, not slashers or brutes like how he used to be.

He told Zubu to take a break from training to meditate on all this and find a sense of peace within herself.

During this time a relationship began to blossom between her and Kru'usox, the Sensei's highly disciplined daughter and the two began seeing each other and training together, with Zubu impressing even Kru'usox with her incredible skill and learning ability.

When The Sensei began selecting among the most disciplined of the students to advance to the next level and began learning of his secret moves however Zubu was shocked to discover that she was left out!

The Sensei acknowledged her fantastic talent he pointed out that she wasn't mentally ready for them yet. She was close but she had not yet found her center. When she did, he would gladly teach her.

Zubu tried and tried but she couldn't figure out what he was talking about. Likely due to her stubbornness and pride.

So she decided to cut out the middle man and began spying on the lessons. Breaking several rules in doing so and then taking what she observed and modifying them to her own two sword style. There was a lot of trial and error there but she got the hang of it and created her own secret techniques.

Zubu later challenged the top students to duels and shocked the entire temple when she countered one of the secret techniques with her own! Literally throwing the technique right back at the user!

One by one the students were flattened by their own moves and Zubu turned to the Sensei, expecting to be praised.

Instead he demanded how she learned the techniques and Zubu admitted she'd been spying on their lessons and made her own versions of them.

Zubu of course thought it was genius but The Sensei informed her that he'd had enough of her constant rule breaking. She was an admitted prodigy but that skill was nothing if she refused to temper her arrogance.

Zubu yelled at him that she was THE BEST! She'd shut down their secret techniques without needing to learn them personally! She could beat anyone at the temple! She was the best in their world! Why wouldn't he just acknowledge it already? They both knew how amazing she was! She could make their temple famous throughout the universe!

And that was exactly what the Sensei had been talking about. He attempted to end the conversation there and simply put her on chores duty until further notice and he had time to fully process all this but Zubu made her biggest mistake.

She challenged The Sensei, accusing him of being scared of her power.

She would MAKE him acknowledge her!

The Sensei attempted to simply talk her down but Zubu refused to stand down. She would make him acknowledge her as the best and a worthy student!

When it became clear that words would not settle this The Sensei reluctantly walked into the center and faced her. But still he did not draw his sword.

Enraged at the perceived insult, Zubu attacked him head on and gave it everything she had. No matter what he thought, she was worthy! She would make him understand that! She would make them all see!

But The Sensei completely overwhelmed her. Without even bothering to draw his sword from its sheathe, he deflected her blows and batted her around at will, giving Zubu a taste of the humiliating beatings she'd dished out to others. The fight ended with Zubu's swords broken and her on her knees staring at the hilts in shock.

The Sensei let her have her peace and then offered to take her inside.

He never looked down on her. He always acknowledged her potential. He just hated to see what her arrogance had made of her.

She could stay the night and get patched up and they would discuss her punishment in the morning.

Unfortunately this act also drove a wedge between Zubu and Kru.

With her last tie to the Temple severed and her relationship with her surrogate family on the rocks and having drawn her blade against her father figure, Zubu left in the middle of the night, leaving a note for Kru.

Zubu stowed away on a ship leaving the planet and spent time bouncing from world to world seeing the universe and trying to find herself. She even eventually forged new swords.

Zubu became well renown as a master swordswoman, still repping her temple albeit under a slightly modified name.

This path eventually lead her into a duel with Captain Malahkai Xzavis of the Nightmare Buccaneers. If she won, she could do whatever she wanted. If he won however, she would join the crew.

Suffice to say, Zubu endured her second loss and joined the crew as per the wager.

Surprisingly she found herself with a team of new friends who gradually became a new family to her.

She still sends messages to the temple on occasion.
