Magical Tattoos

Magical Tattoos are an uncommon variety enchantment. It is an art that, excepting prodigious individuals, takes decades to master. The tattoos are grafted onto the recipient using a method similar to the one that the Inuit people used; taking a needle and thread, dipping it in ink and sliding it through under the skin like you're sewing. It leaves nice clean lines and it's reasonably hygienic, but it can be extremely painful. To prevent the ink from fading you need to get it quite deep under the epidermis. In amongst all the nerves. With a handmade needle, much thicker than the one in your sewing kit, with rough jute thread to pick up the ink, and the ink itself would probably be some horrible concoction. Sandpaper string. Covered in magical ink. In the soft skin on your back. For potentially days on end.

Likewise, once the tattoos have been placed onto the recipients skin, they too must learn to master the powerful tool they have been given.

Magi are known for having magic running directly into their veins. With these tattoos, recipients can get magic imbued directly into their body.

The tattoos are separated into three separate categories: Verbal, Motion and Material.

Verbal tattoos require the least amount of energy to use but have fairly limited usage. They often release energy by glowing and they are hot to the touch.

Motion magic tattoos modify the form of their users to move in ways they normally wouldn't be able to. They include but are not limited to: Claws, Sharper Teeth, Horns and Enhancements. There are enhanced motion magic tattoos as well that have a limited usage despite their greater power such as flight, nightvision, gills and sonar.

Material magical tattoos are usually in the shape of swords and other weapons. They function much like enchanted bags and storage. They require a small amount of magical energy to be expelled from the skin of the owner and can only be removed by the owner. Much of the appeal of a material tattoo is in the ease of concealing a weapon and that, barring very strong magic, cannot be removed or stolen from the user. If the material item is lost it will reappear on the skin of the user in the designated spot within 24 hours. Material tattoos cannot be used to make copies of items. For example, a coin purse tattoo will never have more coins in it than was designated by the user. Finally the tattoos must be to scale.
