Born Hamato Miwa to Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen, Miwa was abducted by Oroku Saki following his battle with Hamato Yoshi.
Hamato Miwa and her family once lived in complete harmony until Yoshi's adoptive brother Oroku Saki made an attack on their home in the middle of the night and sought to battle Yoshi to the death. Some flaming candles were struck with a clawed-weapon and the fight caused a fire to break out, killing Tang Shen in the process. Yoshi had thought Miwa had died in the fire as well, but unbeknownst to him, for revenge purposes, Saki had kidnapped her, feeling he should take something from his former friend since he took something from him; the love of Tang Shen. Since then, Saki, renamed in his birth clan as the Shredder, had renamed her Karai, raised her as his very own daughter, trained her in the ways of Ninjutsu, and fed her tons of lies about what happened to Tang Shen. Presumably, one of these lies was that he and Tang Shen were the ones together and that it was Hamato Yoshi who caused the immense fire.
As Karai, she is a ruthless master of martial arts, ninjutsu and espionage with a keen strategical mind.
She has been assigned as the acting Shredder of the New York Division of The Foot Clan and has tasked Hun with running it, though he still answers to her.
When the giant monster attacks occur in Angel Grove, California, Karai has spies sent to Angel Grove to discover further information.
It is Karai who hires the mad scientist Baxter Stockman to assist the Clan with his advanced technology and mutagenic research, since obviously Xanatos wasn't interested or trustworthy enough for that part.
When Hun and The Hammer Twins are ultimately defeated, Karai travels to New York with The Foot Clan to resume command.
As The Shredder, Karai's physical abilities and conditioning already exceed those of many Olympic athletes but she is most well known for, her greatest asset in her assassinations, has always been her sheer speed.
Karai is one of the fastest members of The Foot Clan. She brags about being 'lightspeed' which, while obviously a huuuuge exaggeration, most of her victims don't live long enough to argue otherwise.
In fact, to most viewers, she appears to simply vanish then reappear like a phantom. Even Shredder himself has noted her talent as a prodigy. A fact that is proven in her first duel with Leonardo early in Season 2 when she breaks Leonardo's katanas!
