The Movie that Apocalypse should've been! 😄
Like, I get what they were going for, and it was alright, but Apocalypse and Phoenix were brought into the story waaaaay too soon.
So this is my attempt at building off of what was in the Movie, the movies that came before and what the future can be.
- First off, the runtime: 3h 55m should be more than enough time to party.
- A longer opening for Magneto, him spending time with his new family before they die so we actually feel more for them when it happens. Magda, his wife, meets Erik after he has become this globally wanted criminal, and even on their first night, he tells her who he is. She sees something beautiful in him, something peaceful, something like Charles also sees in him, that he can be a good man and live a normal life. They actually fall in love and start a family.
- Nina is a mutant who can communicate with animals, and she is very much a Friend to All Living Things, bonding with forest animals that would normally flee human presence. We would also see more of the townspeople in this version and the gradual friendship Erik forms with them. Which makes it hurt that much more when they turn around and betray him after Erik saves one of their lives. Later, when Erik goes back to the factory he was working at, he actually gives them a chance to come clean. Basically, "Tell me who sold me out and I'll let the rest of you go." This will be important later, but keep it in mind for now. When the guilty party does reveal themselves, Erik kills them, as an example and a warning, and leaves.
- Naturally, we follow this up with Jubilee's Xavier's School Commercial! We would pan out from there to showcase Scott Summers getting ready for a day at school. He hugs, he clearly loves them, they help him bind his eyes, etc. We also learn from his parents that Alex is going to be picking him up after school to check out Xaviers. So now all he really has to do is get through the day. Scott wears shades to cover the eyewraps too and he takes a special needs class for blind students there.
- He still has trouble with the bullying douchenozzle as in the movie, but here, unlike every other movie with such a character, the other students are shown being disgusted by it. It's even mentioned that the bully's girlfriend dumped him over it, something he blames Scott for. Near the end of the school sequence, the bully and his buddies corner and attack Scott who tries to fight back, in a manner similar to Steve in the old Captain America Movie when he was still skinny, but he obviously can't win. They rip away his bandages and he covers his eyes and yells at them to get away, obviously not wanting to fry them, but before the fight can escalate Alex pimps in and lays the smackdown as the music swells.
- He hugs his brother as his classmates help Scott to stand up and one of them hands him back his shades. After the nurse checks Scott out, he's free to go and he leaves to go check out Xaviers and Alex gives Scott the tour, leading to the scene where Xavier is giving a class.
- He also bumps into Jean, as in the movie, but she's more polite and understanding here since she can tell he's blind. She also gets in some good natured teasing thanks to her telepathy.
- The scene with Scott obliterating Xavier's favorite tree is the same as normal. There's some testing in the labs and with Scott's powers until they are able to nail the ruby quartz glasses Scott wears. The deleted scene with Hank giving him his visor comes later.
- From here, we cut to Africa where Ororo Munroe is making her living as a thief. The greatest thief in Cairo. She's having fun doing her thing through the city with people unable to stop her. Eventually someone does notice but lets her get away. Later on, she gets cornered by some thugs in Cairo....just for a moment before she blows them away with her wind and flies away.
- As she's relaxing in her house and looking over loot, Mystique reveals herself and shapeshifts into her true form. She explains to her that she had a tracer hidden in her wallet, which Ororo stole, and she tracked her down with that. They talk over drinks and hang out together. Ororo idolized Mystique in X-Men: Apocalypse. Let's see that in their interactions and give her a reason to do so.Mystique ends up recruiting Ororo to help her in breaking up a mutant fighting ring in Germany, putting them on a collision course with Magneto.
- Speaking of whom, Erik returns to a bunker where he'd stashed his helmet and armor after meeting his wife, and opens it up with his powers, just tearing open the bunker and breaking open the floor with a hammer to retrieve the suitcase where he'd placed them. Hen then takes off his jacket to gear up.
- Mystique and Ororo pack up and leave to find their ride but are attacked by a group of thugs and police but Ororo easily dismisses them. Did I mention Storm is hammy in this version? Even better, they get some back up from Toad who acts as their pilot. Mystique saved him in Future Past, so why not add him to her crew? On the way to Germany, Mystique plans their breakout.
- Back at Xaviers, we catch up with the X-Men where the students are showcasing their powers and attending classes and training. Basically, just some character development to get to know the students better. Also, more Jubilee! We also learn that Angel is already a member of the X-Men at this point in time. We should take time to get to know him before Apoc comes in at a later movie and turns him into Arcangel.
- From here, we have some scenes of Magneto tracking down Caliban and his mutant underground railroad. When he finds him, Erik walks right in as everyone stares in awe. Among the mutants, we meet Ink again and Psylocke as well. Through their interactions, Magneto learns about the fight club and he convinces the mutants to join him in freeing their mutant brothers and sisters from slavery. You know, the usual persuasive, charismatic Magneto mutant freedom and power speech. From there, he asks Caliban to show him where the fight club is.
- Both Magneto and Mystique, strange minds thinking alike, are planning their own mutant breakout and they are going to come together.
- Speaking of the fight club, we finally see it and there are chilling similarities to the bad future, with mutants stuck in electrified cages, shocked with cattle prods and they have bombs on their necks to keep them from causing trouble. It's Blob's turn to fight and his cage is opened up and he's zapped as they force him out onto the ring to fight his opponent. As his chains are unlocked, Blob considers killing the men but his collar starts beeping and he has to go out and fight and he's told to make it interesting for the crowd. As the announcer is doing his thing, the bloodthirsty crowd jeers and shouts at the mutants and bets are made on the fight. After dragging the fight out enough for the crowd to get their kicks, Blob beats his opponent unconscious and throws him to the ground. Without getting a chance to rest, his next opponent is dragged out almost immediately after the fight. As Blob is fighting the mutants, the manager of the fight club is on the phone with a Mr.Essex assuring him the samples will be sent to him.
- Mystique, Toad and Storm infiltrate and make their way to the power generators, swiftly taking out anyone who tries to stop them as Blob's third opponent is brought out. Katrina Wagner. It's a very tortoise and hare style fight. Blob can't hit Nightcrawler but she can't hurt him either.
- While they're fighting, Mystique and her team make it to the generators and Ororo destroys them, taking out all of the lights inside and shutting down the cage and collars and throwing everyone into confusion. Nightcrawler makes Blob run into the cage and he discovers its down so he immediately knocks it over and throws it on top of the spectators. At the same time, Magneto arrives and swats aside everyone in his way with his team of mutant recruits. They reach the mutant cages and Magneto rips them open and takes out the collars and uses all of the metal to slaughter the guards.
- Mystique and her crew return to find the newly freed mutants taking out their oppressors and she pushes through them to find Katrina and beckons her over. Despite her horrible treatment, Katrina still tries to save a few of the spectators and teleports them over to the entrance.
If there is one thing I appreciate about the OG X-Films is that at least the build to Jean going Phoenix was good. Even if the execution was another story. But it took two films to for them to build The Phoenix up.
